Most orchids take their nutreants from the air. They root to trees or rocks for stability, not for anything extracted from their hosts. The bamboo orchid grows naturally in the ground, rooting in the acid soil surrounding the crater of Kilowaua Volcano on the big island of Hawaii. It sends up tall flower spikes that tend to have one bloom at a time at the top of the spike. The spikes resemble bamboo, thus the name.
